16/06/2017 - EC Horizon2020 Project SITEX-II training course

The training course developed within the EC Horizon2020 Project SITEX-II („Sustainable Independent Technical Expertise Network in Radioactive Waste Disposal: Interactions and Implementation“, 2015–2017) was held on 12–16 June 2017 in Kaunas.

This EC funded Project is being carried out by Nuclear Engineering Laboratory together with other 17 organisations from EU countries, Canada.

The five-day training programme consisted of lectures and practical exercises on various aspects which needed to be considered during the review of the Safety Case of geological repositories. The challenges arising during the implementation of geological disposal programmes in different countries were introduced; the participation and role of regulatory bodies, decisions to be made within the process of implementation of a geological repository were presented. Besides, the requirements for technical experts involved in the Safety Case review, the demand of independent research and scope of activities were identified. Recent experience and outcomes from the review of the Safety Case of geological disposal in France and Finland was presented. Overview of the achievements in Lithuanian nuclear and waste management and disposal and long-term perspectives were presented by A. Narkūnienė, a senior researcher of Nuclear Engineering Laboratory.

The training event attracted participants: from Bulgaria, Belgium, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, France, Ukraine, and Germany. The Chief inspector of State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) Z. Patašius also participated in the training course.

The lectures and practical exercises were given by the lecturers from SITEX-II Project partners: Bel V (Belgium), CV Rez (Czech Republic), Decom (Slovakia), FANC (Belgium), Mutadis (France), IRSN (France), STUK (Finland), and SSTC NRS (Ukraine). The training was organized jointly by LEI and ENSTTI (European Nuclear Safety Training and Tutoring Institute).
