|On the 5th of February the Joint activity agreement between Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) and Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) was extended
In 2014 partners – Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) and Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) – joined their forces aiming at developing the ecosystem of innovations by activating the infrastructure of the Santaka valley. The objective of such partnership – to provide beneficial conditions for cooperation of business enterprises and science institutions, to promote development of innovative technological solutions and implementation of innovation at national and international level, to coordinate joint intellectual property control and technologies transfer activities. In 2015 Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) also joined those three partners.
The activity of the Santaka valley academic partners is the best example of Kaunas city scientific potential gathering and cooperation. We are grateful for such partnership, whereas implemented joint activities reveal that we are moving towards correct direction. Only working hand in hand we will develop important innovations, strengthen science and business synergy, will promote Lithuanian competitiveness at international level. A good example of this – one of two CERN business incubators will be established in Lithuania, the Santaka valley, – said rector of KTU prof. Eugenijus Valatka.
In the significance of partners cooperation does not doubt LSMU rector, prof. Dr. Habil. Remigijus Žaliūnas: “this is an exclusive case when universities and the institute gather their capacities into one for joint scientific research, innovations, expansion. I hope this will even wider will open up scientific potential possibilities for students, researchers and business”.
During the cooperation period partners implemented several joint projects. The successful examples could be: KTU and LSMU developed a complex analysis system for conducting the diagnosis of the early malignant skin tumour, ultrasound rechannelling facility of blood vessels, portable virtual reality system, and depression diagnostics system. The partners for these inventions have submitted the patent applications.
LEI and KTU scientists jointly improved the innovative complex air flow velocity metering system. Experience accumulated during the project will be successfully used in developing innovative ultrasound meters together with the company AXIOMA Metering. Another cooperation project where participated LEI and VDU researchers enabled these institutions to get evolved into international consortium and submit applications for the EU R&D Horizon 2020 program project, which received the EC financing.
One more result of KTU, LSMU and VDU partnership – in 2018 implemented project Health Innovation Development in Holistic Communities: Creating Open Educational Environments for Knowledge Integration (cHICOLab).
Last year VDU, KTU, LSMU and LEI established the first and only one in Lithuania inter-institutional science fund, whereas a week ago the first joint projects of researchers of different fields were introduced. This is a perfect cooperation example which enables to compete at international level as well, for example, at present time Kaunas universities have won the biggest number of EU R&D programme Horizon 2020 projects.
LEI director Dr. Sigitas Rimkevičius emphasized that the activities and future plans of partners overstep the boundaries of Kaunas city or even Lithuania: this joint activity agreement among science and studies institutions, operating in Kaunas city, provides greater possibilities to gather and highlight Kaunas city scientific potential and to be a stronger leverage to Lithuanian scientific potential accumulated in Vilnius city. The cooperation among partners enables to develop innovative products and technologies as well as strengthen the positions at the European Research Area.
