2013/07/09 - Country Analysis: Does Lithuania Have A Nuclear Future?

Jul (NucNet): Since the 1990s, a proposal has existed for the construction of a new nuclear power plant at Visaginas in Lithuania.

A legally non-binding referendum in 2012 showed more than 60 percent of the public were opposed to its construction, a result attributed by the government to the public being influenced by the accident at Fukushima-Daiichi.

Lithuania’s prime minister Algirdas Butkevičius said after the referendum that the Visaginas project would be cancelled, although a formal decision from the legislature is pending. The government has repeatedly said it is committed to the development of nuclear power and announced in April 2013 that it plans to renew talks with Latvia and Estonia on construction of the Visaginas plant.

A special NucNet country report, published today, looks at the politics behind Lithuania’s plans for nuclear energy and possible ways forward for the Visaginas project.

It also analyses Lithuania’s nuclear energy policy, security and safety, and the nuclear fuel cycle.
