14th International Conference of Young Scientists on Energy Issues took place at the institute

On May 25-26, LITHUANIAN ENERGY INSTITUTE (LEI) HOSTED AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS ON ENERGY ISSUES (CYSENI 2017).

The objective of the conference is to bring together students and young scientists from various countries to share experience in solving energy issues and problems, introduce colleagues to ongoing research and the latest research results; conference participants were also given a chance to learn to review and evaluate papers, relevance of the analysed topic and importance of the obtained results.

This year‘s CYSENI is the fourteenth conference organized by the initiative of young scientists at the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI). 77 abstracts were submitted for the conference, 61 of which have accepted for presentation at the conference. From the submitted scientific papers, experienced reviewers selected 59 that were appropriate for publishing in the conference proceedings.

The conference attracts increasingly more participants from foreign countries. This year the conference was attended by 135 visitors. Papers were presented by 29 doctoral students and young scientists from Lithuania, as well as 30 from neighbouring countries, i.e., Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, and more distant ones, like Norway, France, Denmark, Germany,  Spain, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan.

The conference organizer Vytautas Akstinas and Director of Lithuanian Energy Institute Dr. Sigitas Rimkevičius opened the 14th international conference “CYSENI 2017” and delivered an opening speech to the participants of the conference. The conference participants were also greeted by Director General of Kaunas Energy company Dr. Rimantas Bakas, where he emphasized a long successful cooperation between Kaunas Energy company and LEI and wished the juniors researchers success in their future works.

Conference participants were invited to attend three plenary session presentations – by the representative of Royal Institute of Technology – KTH (Sweden) Prof. Waclaw Gudowski (topic of the presentation – Major Physics Discoveries Leading to Nuclear Power), the representative of EURATOM/EUROfusion consortium Programme Management Unit Dr. Francesco Maviglia (topic of the presentation – The Road to Nuclear Fusion Energy: Updates on ITER and DEMO projects), the Executive Director of the Lithuanian Wind Power Association Aistis Radavičius (topic of the presentation – Wind energy becoming mainstream energy source).

During the two days of the conference, 59 papers were presented. Reviewers asked questions, commented on the papers of young scientists and conducted discussions. This year, doctorate students and young scientists mostly focused on investigation of the issues concerning research in different energy generation technologies (incl. renewable energy sources, nuclear fission and fusion energy, hydrogen energy), energy efficiency and reliability, smart energy networks and sustainable energy development. These are particularly relevant topics corresponding to the European Union priorities and energy development scenarios developed in each country individually and implemented measures, aimed at promoting sustainable development, energy efficiency, and energy security.

The next 15th CYSENI will be held on 23-25 May 2018 as usually in the Lithuanian Energy Institute, Kaunas (Lithuania). All young scientists doing research in energy field are invited to submit their abstracts by 18 December 2017.
