A number of methods of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) have been developed (and more are being developed) for use in diverse engineering applications. Yet, there are still a number of critical problems which impede full deployment of PHM and its benefits in practice. In this lecture, we look in some of these PHM challenges and look out to advancements for PHM deployment.

Enrico Zio is full professor at the Centre for research on Risk and Crises (CRC) of Ecole de Mines, ParisTech, PSL University, France, full professor and President of the Alumni Association at Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

His research focuses on the modeling of the failure-repair-maintenance behavior of components and complex systems, for the analysis of their reliability, maintainability, prognostics, safety, vulnerability, resilience and security characteristics, and on the development and use of Monte Carlo simulation methods, artificial intelligence techniques and optimization heuristics.

In 2020, Professor Zio has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

European Research and Innovation Days

European Research and Innovation Days

Let’s shape the future together

European Research and Innovation Days is the European Commission’s annual flagship Research and Innovation event, bringing together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and the public to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond.

The event will take place online on 23 and 24 June 2021, allowing everyone to get involved from anywhere.

This year marks the start of Horizon Europe, our most ambitious EU research and innovation programme ever and will be a decisive moment to strengthen our European Research Area. Cooperation in research and innovation is essential in our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and will pave the way to a greener and more digital future. The European Research and Innovation Days represent a unique opportunity to add your voice to the conversation.

The event is all about collaboration: bringing together individuals and experts from all areas to build.

Join live sessions with interesting speakers talking about the future of European research and innovation, and Horizon Europe, the new European research and innovation funding programme.

Create your own programme choosing from all the live sessions available, ranging from high-level plenaries to immersive panel discussions on topics such as the post-COVID-19 recovery, the European Research Area, digitalisation, our green future and more.

EU Green Week 2021

Pollution affects everybody – through the air we breathe, the water we drink or the land we grow our food on. It is the largest environmental cause of multiple mental and physical diseases, and of premature deaths, especially among children, people with certain medical conditions and the elderly. But pollution does not affect everybody equally. People who live in more deprived areas very often live close to contaminated sites or in areas where there is a very high flow of traffic. Pollution is also one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity. It reduces the ability of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon sequestration and decontamination.

But it can be prevented. The EU Action Plan toward a Zero Pollution Ambition is a key action of the European Green Deal scheduled for spring 2021. It will help to create a toxic-free environment across the EU by better monitoring and, reporting, and by preventing and remedying pollution from air, water, soil, and consumer products.
It will also support the post-COVID 19 recovery by helping to rebuild a more sustainable EU economy, creating job opportunities and reducing social inequalities. The European Green Week 2021 will be dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’. It will also look at other relevant European Green Deal initiatives, such as the climate initiatives, the upcoming Chemicals Strategy, as well as initiatives in the fields of energy, industry, mobility, agriculture, fisheries, health and biodiversity.

EU Green Week 2021 will be an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how we can work together to make the ambition for a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.

59th ESReDA Seminar on Creating Safe and Resilient Logistic Systems (26-27 October 2021) – Call for Papers

You are kindly invited to join the 59th ESReDA Seminar on Creating Safe and Resilient Logistic Systems to be held in Wroclaw (Poland), 26-27 October 2021, hosted by Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.

The issues of safe and resilient logistics systems constitute the competitive advantage of supply chains. Current enterprises implement their processes in a variable and uncertain environment. These conditions significantly affect the accuracy and effectiveness of decisions. Managers’ attention is focused primarily on events related to the occurrence of operational risk. In this case, the source of risks is internal disturbances in companies and processes implemented at organizations’ interfaces. Today, however, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, disaster risk research is also gaining particular importance. The consequences of the current pandemic indicate the necessity for companies to develop also competencies concerning the assessment and management of “black swan” risks. For this reason, creating secure and resilient supply chains takes on particular importance today. For this reason, the issues to be raised during the 59th ESReDA seminar “Creating Safe and Resilient Logistic Systems” are important not only for scientific but also utilitarian reasons.

The Seminar aims to discuss theories, concepts, and experiences of enhancing the use of knowledge for better reliability, resilience, and risk management. The presented research results, operational proposals, and case studies will respond to enterprises’ managerial staff’s current problems throughout Europe. Thus, this Seminar will bring together researchers, practitioners, specialists, and decision-makers to discuss strategies and practical experiences in the given field of research.

The Call for Papers (pdf) is enclosed to this email. Abstracts to be summited before the 15th June 2021.

Please visit the seminar’s page for more information:

Seminar format (physical, semi-physical or only virtual) to be decided in August due to the covid-19 situation in Europe.
