Traineeship of Egyptian nuclear energy specialists at LEI

The traineeship of Egyptian nuclear energy specialists from Egyptian Nuclear & Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) is taking place at LEI. The traineeship on theme Application of the ASTEC integral code for severe accident simulation in nuclear power plants is carried out by specialists of the Laboratory of Nuclear Installation Safety. The traineeship is carried out under the project Training and Tutoring for experts of the National Regulatory Authorities and their Technical Support Organisations for developing or strengthening their regulatory and technical capabilities which is funded by the European Commission cooperation in nuclear safety field Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) and coordinated by the European Nuclear Safety Training and Tutoring Institute (ENSTTI).

The four-month traineeship is set in two stages. The first stage was carried out in April and May of 2018. The second stage started on the 17th of September and will continue till the 23rd of November.

During the traineeship LEI specialists present to Egyptian specialists the basics of nuclear safety and deterministic safety analysis and train them to work with the ASTEC software package. The training courses are carried out in accordance with ENSTTI methodology by transferring our (LEI) specialists’ know-how. During the training courses the participants perform individual tasks and prepare reports that are evaluated at the end of each stage.

During the second stage a representative of ASTEC developers, Dr. Patrick Chaterlard, from the French National Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) paid a visit to LEI. He provided the training participants with the ASTEC integral simulation software package for severe accidents at nuclear power plants and its application to simulate accidents at VVER type nuclear power plants. During this training session Dr. Patrick Chaterlard answered to a number of questions related to the software package application. His lectures were useful not only for trainees from Egypt but also for LEI specialists working with ASTEC programme.
