Standards are seen as a major measure to develop the markets for solid bio fuels to achieve the environmental, social and agricultural goals of the Commission. On this background the aim of the BioNorm project is to work out a quality assurance system for solid bio fuels to help to develop the bio fuel market. This will be based on extensive work on sampling (i.e. investigations of the sampling errors and the sample reduction errors) and the testing of physical-mechanical fuel characteristics (i.e. moisture content & bulk density, ash melting behaviour, particle size distribution & particle dimensions, durability and raw density of pellets & briquettes) and chemical fuel characteristics (i.e. sulphur & chlorine content, major & minor elements). The results of this work will contribute to the work of CEN TC 335 “Solid Biofuels”. To ensure a successful project progress an Advisory Board will be installed.
