Project table

This project brought together five scientific institutions – Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), VGTU Institute of Thermal Insulation (VGTU-TI), Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), KTU Institute of Physical Electronics (KTU-FEI). The aim of the project was to create new cement building materials (binders, mortars, repair mixes, concrete) whose properties are determined by the newly formed nanostructures. The main tasks of the project was:

  1. to investigate the principles of nanostructures formation and regulation in cementitious composite materials, consisting of several binding components, and to define their influence on product’s properties;
  2. to determine the influence of various modifiers (zeolite materials, colloidal sodium silicate solution, zeolite microfibre formed in a plasma reactor, carbon microfibre, ultrafisperse SiO2 powder) on the formation of nanostructures in cementitious materials; to investigate their properties and make suggestions for practical application.

LEI activities in the Project

Oil refineries produce high levels of catalytic cracking catalyst waste. During the project, zeolite waste was recycled into microfiber using atmospheric plasma technology. The microstructure of refractory concrete was modified with a new microfibre. Research has shown that microfibre acts as a crystallization center since new amorphous and crystalline phases form on the surface of fibre, that increases the thermal stability of refractory concrete.

Total cost: 301 060 EUR (LEI part: 36 130 EUR)
